PITTSBURGH, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) union issued the following statement after the Supreme Court voted 6-3 in King v. Burwell to uphold subsidies in states that declined to create their own health insurance exchanges.

United Steelworkers.

Today the Supreme Court made the right decision in upholding the premium tax credits to all Americans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Any other decision would have penalized citizens in 34 states solely because state leaders refused to act.

The ACA was an important step towards ensuring quality, affordable health care for all Americans. Since its passage, over 16 million uninsured Americans have gained coverage and insurance companies can no longer play tricks and deny coverage to people with illnesses.

USW has fought to expand access to health care for many years and will continue to do so. We support this decision and will oppose future attacks that aim to roll-back access to health care.

The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors.  For more information: http://www.usw.org/.
