Failure to expand dental coverage stymies healthcare reform efforts

Roughly 4 million Georgia residents lack dental coverage, and many haven't seen a dentist in decades, Kaiser Health News reported. The issue: The Affordable Care Act didn't include dental care among its "essential health benefits." On top of that, the 90 or so plans sold on Healthcare.gov that cover dental care do so with a dizzying array of premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs. Several states recently expanded Medicaid coverage for dental care, FierceHealthPayer previously reported, but beneficiaries still struggle to find dentists who accept Medicaid, which provides lower reimbursements than private insurance. It all adds up to expensive emergency department visits for otherwise routine dental care. Article
