Fewer insurers to participate in Medicare Advantage program
Fewer insurers will participate in the Medicare Advantage program in 2014, primarily because the reform law drops payments to companies providing the plans, according to a new analysis from Avalere Health. Next year, consumers will see a 5.3 percent decrease in the number of available Medicare Advantage plans, from 2,664 to 2,522. "The multitude of payment changes for MA plans under the ACA are taking root and starting to broadly impact the number and types of plans available in the market," said Matt Eyles, executive vice president of Avalere Health. In addition to the reduced payments, Avalere found other factors driving the decline in Medicare Advantage include modifications to the risk adjustment model by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, implementation of new medical-loss ratio requirements and application of the new health insurer fee.
