IRS: 1.4 million Americans' subsidies at risk

About 1.4 million households that got financial help for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act failed to properly account for it on their tax returns last year, putting their subsidies at risk if they want to keep coverage, according to the Internal Revenue Service. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen reported the new data in a letter to members of Congress about the preliminary results from the 2015 filing season as it related to Affordable Care Act provisions.

Additionally, of the taxpayers who reported an individual shared responsibility payment, an estimated 313,000 low-income taxpayers reported a payment when they should have claimed a healthcare coverage exemption, the IRS said. Letter
