Michigan to experience 6.5 percent health insurance rate hike in 2016

Tools

Michigan consumers can expect to pay 6.5 percent more for health insurance next year,The Detroit News reported. While the increase is lower than last year's hike of 8 percent, state officials and industry leaders say the rise in premiums is modest. But healthcare advocates contend that consumers aren't able to judge whether the increases are warranted because there is not enough available information about how rates are calculated. Ryan Sullivan, policy director for Michigan Consumers for Healthcare, tells the newspaper that consumers don't know how to put the increases into context due to the lack of transparency in the process, which involves proposals from health insurance companies, reviews from state officials and approvals from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services. The largest rate increase for 2016 belongs to Healthplus of Michigan at 35.8 percent, while Meridian Health Plan has the biggest decline with a 12.6 percent drop, according to state officials. Article
