Uninsured trade volunteer work for dental care

Medicare typically does not cover dental services and even Medicaid-eligible adults lack dental benefits in eight states. So a program in Michigan enables thousands of low-income, uninsured adults to earn free dental services by helping local nonprofits, including the local homeless shelter, Red Cross and Salvation Army, Kaiser Health News reported. The move fills a critical health insurance coverage gap as healthcare reform does not improve adults' access to dental care and only expands dental coverage to children. The program also helps control healthcare costs as many uninsured patients wait until dental pain gets severe and requires a costly hospital emergency trip. Article
