UnitedHealth plans further expansion into ACA exchange market

UnitedHealth Group, which initially took a cautious approach in offering plans on the Affordable Care Act exchanges, has since expanded its reach in the marketplaces. Now the nation's largest insurer plans even more growth in that market, executives said in an earnings call Thursday to discuss the company's third-quarter results. UnitedHealth will expand to 11 new public exchange markets in 2016, President and CFO Dave Wichmann told investors, calling the exchanges "a strong viable growth market for us." The insurer currently covers 550,000 individuals through the ACA marketplaces, Wichmann added. In other positive news for UnitedHealth, revenue for the company's health services unit Optum jumped 61 percent to $19.3 billion in Q3. Earnings webcast (registration required)
