WellPoint drops Lipitor coverage
WellPoint will stop covering the cholesterol-lowering drug, Lipitor, and instead pay for generic versions beginning April 1. The insurer hopes the coverage change will compel members to take the less-expensive generic drug, Atorvastatin, instead of paying out-of-pocket prices for Pfizer's branded Lipitor, reported Fox Business. WellPoint's new Lipitor policy won't apply to its commercial clients that use an outside firm to handle drug benefits. Although WellPoint didn't disclose how many members could be affected, Colleen Haines, WellPoint's staff vice president of clinical pharmacy services, said it "will apply to a large portion of our customer base."
