Arizona's CO-OP sees surge in enrollment after dicey 2014

Arizona's consumer operated and oriented plan (CO-OP), Meritus, disputes a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) audit that reveals the CO-OP insured only 869 individuals as of Dec. 31, reports the Associated Press. Meritus Vice President Veronica Piotrowski says the company enrolled 3,500 consumers in November, but HHS stands by its numbers. Despite the recent audit, Piotrowski says enrollment has increased and the CO-OP now covers nearly 56,000 residents. Still, Meritus held only 2 percent of the market last year, according to numbers provided by the Arizona Department of Insurance. Piotrowski says the CO-OP's poor start was a result of the shaky rollout of Healthcare.gov and lack of public knowledge about the company. Article
